From September 14 to 22, 2018, the Aachener Galerie Am Elisengarten in Hartmannstraße 6 will present an exhibition of new works by John Mackie. For the third time the Scottish artist exhibits in Aachen - for the first time also Aachener motives. A special honor, because it is usually the European metropolises that Mackie takes on artistically.
In his pictures of Venice, Barcelona or even Paris, he manages to capture the flair of the bustling cities. Away from the major sights, he wanders along the boulevards and streets, where he finds his motives. The observer quickly finds himself immediately moved to the painter's place and literally feels the blazing midday sun in Piazza San Marco in Venice. The next picture he walks in the protective shade of trees and market umbrellas on the busy Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Immediately afterwards, another image transports the viewer to the evening Champs-Elysées, on whose sidewalks, still wet from the rain, there are manifold reflections of light. The streets come to life and the viewer imagines himself in the picture, takes a seat at the tables, begins to hear the city, to perceive familiar odors, to hear typical noises. Thes pictures are powerful and at the same time dreamy, interpreted in the sense of plein-airism and shaped in the formal language of impressionism.
John Mackie was born in Glasgow in 1953 and is considered a representative of the New Glasgow School. From 1972 to 1976 he studied at the Glasgow School of Art. Already at the beginning of his education, he was particularly interested in the intensive use of color. In this context, he dealt with the positions of Impressionism of Renoir over van Gogh to Cezanne. A scholarship enabled him to travel to the US and Canada. He also spent a long time in Italy and France. He is regularly represented at exhibitions with his works. In Aachen he guested already in 2008 and 2016 at the Petzold's Gallery.
