Across sixteen chapters, the novel *Halbstadt*, published by Rimbaud Verlag, traces the journey of three young people—Toni Klingson, Alexander Müller and Veronika Vogler. Klingson tries his hand at writing, Müller at painting, and Vogler at being a muse. The story is set in the 1980s. Elements of contemporary history are repeatedly woven into the narrative, albeit in an alienated form (the peace demonstration in Bonn’s Hofgarten, Chernobyl, the Barschel case, the fall of the Berlin Wall). The novel begins and ends on New Year’s Eve morning and afternoon of 1989. The first and last chapters form the framework within which the story of Klingson and Müller is told.
